|“||Maybe you should worry less about the dogs, who've already made up their mind about killing you, and worry more about me, who's still mulling it over.||”|
—Ren Kuroi to an interrogation prisoner.
A shinobi prodigy, Ren was sadistic, manipulative, and obsessed with power. She was a skilled tactician who orchestrated the capture of Jinchuriki, Ichiro Inuyama and flawlessly infiltrated Shitagakure.
Ren also harbored deep mental instabilities, believing it was her fault that her parents abandoned her. Raised by her uncle in an environment without a mother-figure or suitable father-figure, Ren had to be nothing less than perfect in the eyes of both her uncle and his colleagues. After the betrayal of her two closest friends, Kagome Minoru and Kenji Akimoto and her adoptive brother Jirou, these instabilities were brought up to the surface.
Ren was born to Takashi Kuroi and Sora Kuroi about three months before the Kuroi Family Massacre. Ren grew up in the riches, the splendor, and the privileges of royalty in Konohagakure. Her sharp wits and the fact that she was a shinobi prodigy gained her great attention and acclaim, however along with her prodigious status, her reckless and thrill-seeking behaviour also brought her negative attention from villagers, other shinobi and council, alike. Her uncle began raising at an early stage, taking her into his confidence and educating her in politics, while on the other hand neglecting her own personal interests. She later attended the Ninja Academy, where she met Kagome Minoru and Kenji Akimoto, both were children of council members.
Even when she was only nine years old, Ren displayed her natural talents, along with her tendency for malice and reckless abandon. When her younger adoptive brother Jirou succeeded in performing a cartwheel after Ren had failed while attempting to do her own, Ren responded by shoving her little "brother" to the ground and laughing gleefully. When she saw nine-year-old Kagome attempting to hide her crush on Kenji, Ren used her acting and cunning to convince her Kenji to play with them (who would much rather read books than anything else). During their game, she proceeded to place an apple on Kagome's head and set it on fire, forcing Kenji to tackle Kagome into a fountain to put out the fire. She found great pleasure in embarrassing the two of them.
A true megalomaniac, Ren desired power from a young age, suggesting that she would be just like her parents, much to her uncle, Takao's, horror. She even showed some slight disrespect to her own uncle during a council meeting as when she was told to refer to him as a candidate for the Eighth Hokage, she responded with, "Can't I just call him 'uncle'? He's not exactly the powerful shinobi he used to be".

Returning Home & Jonin ExamsEdit
As a Genin Ren would wear black pants, black sandals and a black sweatsjacket with two grey horizontal rectangles on the back only inches apart. As well as a simple red shirt underneath. After becoming a Genin she added a gray Konoha headband.
As a Chunin Ren kept the gray headband, but changed the rest of her attire. Black sandals with a slight heel to them, black pants that were more form fitting than the baggy ones she used to have. A red shirt, and a black leather jacket with three gray horizontal rectangles that reach around to form stripes. To finish the complete outfit Ren has added easily removeable silver bands around her legs, two on each.
Ren dones on a long black cape with the with symbols of Konohagakure, and the ANBU Special Hunter Unit horizontally down the back. With the rest of her Chunin outfit.
During the time of her defection from the village, Ren loses the black cape and replaces it with a long sleeved, ankle length waistcoat with ragged edges to her attire and removes the symbols. Replacing them with the kanji of "The Last Firstborn" (最後長子, Saigo Chōshi)—considered to be an allusion to her, technically, being the last firstborn of the Kuroi Family—horizontally down the back in red print along with red and white flame motifs trimmed at the bottom edges of the cape. Instead of losing the gray headband, that had been scratched during her battle with Daisuke in the Valley of the End, she tied it around her left bicep.
Ren relentlessly drilled herself towards becoming the strongest, even risking many fatal injuries to do so. She believed that power and determination are what makes a person strong. But in time that belief turned from power and determination to power and dominance. She had neither pity nor mercy towards those she marked as treasonous or inferior.Ren was marked by a distinct lack of empathy. Even as a child, she was seen to react with hostility when outdone, when she fought dirty against Jirou, after it was clear that he was besting her. This behavior would characterize her relationship with her friends for many years. Although she could show sympathy towards them, she never cared for their feelings and manipulated them as she saw fit, such as when she manipulated Kagome into becoming lovers, only because of the hidden agenda to find Daisuke.
Ren was known to have an extremely cruel personality. From a very young age, Ren demonstrated sadistic aggression and a near total lack of remorse to friends, servants, family, and animals. Her own sensei, Murakoshi Hayate, once remarked, "What is wrong with that child?” after observing her casual cruelties. Ren's first reaction to hearing of the Seventh Hokage's death was to wonder whether this now made her uncle a candidate. She later dismissed her uncle as a "softy" and a "loser" when learning he had postponed his campaign for Eight Hokage, to go visit a sick friend in Kumogakure.Ren's powerfully characteristic flames symbolize the power she possessed and constantly sought to increase. Her apathy also accounted for her ability to control herself whenever Belial's chakra leaked out.According to Takao, the ability to do so required complete control of all emotion, which would not prove difficult for Ren with her one-track mentality.Because of these skills, she was also an excellent tactician, regularly displaying cunning, perception, and resourcefulness that allowed her to take advantage of almost any situation. She possessed good self-control, facing down a Shitagakure ninja and deceiving him when held captive, and can lie with a straight face and no physical reactions.
Ironically, for all her refinement and self-confidence, Ren did retain some insecurity. As a result of her the negligence she recieved from her uncle, believing in both that it was her fault her parents abandoned her and that her uncle Takao—her last remaning blood relative—loved her adoptive brother Jirou more than her. However, Ren later on began to show signs of a fragile mentality. For all of her self-assurance, she was momentarily driven into rage when it was revealed by a missing-nin she was assigned to capture along with her uncle, revealed that her parents were alive and not dead like how her uncle always claimed that they were. But soon when she set out to find them, her battle with Daisuke in the Valley of the End and his sudden betrayal drove her to the edge for an instant, hinting at just how unstable she would later prove to be.
Ren's mentality continued to crumble in the final weeks of her residency in Konoha until her defection. When she attacked Daisuke, Kagome, Kenji and Jirou during a simple day at their training ground (because of an argument that got heated), Ren was evidently losing her sanity, as her attacks became far more vicious. On the day of her initiation into becoming a high ranking member of the Tasogare, Ren became excessively paranoid, exiling all her subjects for minor or suspected offenses. When she styled her hair for the coronation, she was so frustrated by her inability to tie up her hair bun that she cut away her trademark bangs, leaving her hair a tattered mess. She then saw her mother in her mirror in an apparent hallucination. Her mother complimented her, saying that she always had beautiful hair. Ren then asked her mother why she was there, and Sora told her that she wouldn't miss her daughter's initiation. Ren told her not to pretend to act proud, stating that she knew her mother thought she was a monster as did the rest those who were once loved ones. The hallucination of her mother then told her that she didn't think that, that Ren was just confused, and that she loved her. Ren then went deeper into insanity, threw her brush at the mirror, breaking it, and broke down crying.
This incident exposed a complex facet to Ren's persona. It was clear that Sora's "abandonment" from when she was a child, the short time they had together after Ren infiltrated Shitagakure, to her mother's untimely disappearance ultimately had a devastating impact upon Ren's fragile psyche. As Ren's sanity began slipping away from her, this inability to reconcile her perceived belief that Sora considered her a monster with the truer (though idealized) maternal feelings of love and support that Sora demonstrated in the hallucination created an inescapable conflict in her mind that furthered Ren's eventual mental collapse. Another thread of this argument explored the possibility that Ren harbored a guilt-ridden conscience, long suppressed or held at bay for many years by her indomitable will. Her conscience, in the form of her mother Sora (whose love and guidance she secretly longed for but could never have) reared itself stronger than before. Sora's gentle, motherly concerns over Ren's use of fear and cruelty as her only means of maintaining relationships with friends and family alike induces a violent mental breakdown prior to her initiation.
- Enhanced Strength: Despite her lean stature, and having Belial sealed within her, Ren is amazingly strong, capable of fighting people far bigger and with more muscle mass than herself.
- Enhanced Speed & Reflexes: Being trained by her uncle Takao at an early age, Ren has impressive speed. She can move at speeds that would leave average shinobi with no time to react. When attacked she can easily change the direction of her attacks (except for her Rasengan), leaving her opponent guessing her next moves and forcing them to rely on their own reflexes to survive. This, coupled with Belial's extra boost could leave even some of the most powerful opponents at a bind.
- Immense Endurance & Durability: Ren's most astonishing traits. Despite her size, she can take hits that would kill even the above average shinobi. She can even survive some very powerful jutus, a notable example is taking a Chidori straight through the chest. Another is being within a few feet of an exploding clone.
Powers and AbilitiesEdit
Ren was first taught how to use the Summoning Technique by Ichirou Inuyama. After allowing Ren to sign the summoning contract with the ninken, Ichirou took Ren through the execution of the technique in order to provide Ren with allies in future battles. Additionally, Ichirou's other motivation to teaching Ren how to summon was to help Ren to realise and take advantage of Belial's chakra.
However, due to a botched mission gone horrible wrong, her contract with the ninkin was severed and Ren had to make a contract with another animal, the wolves. The types of wolves that Ren can summon at any time is proportional to her chakra and skill, as when she first started out she could only summon newborn pups. At first, Ren had a hard time getting any specific wolf, as she summoned either Wulava or Wulflare. But when she used Belial's chakra, or when she was truly motivated, Ren was able to summon the wolf boss, Vulcarne.
As a talented ninja and member of the Kuroi Family and a shinobi of Konoha, Ren has great proficiency in the use of nature transformation.
Ren has a strong affinity to the nature manipulation of the Fire Release, having mastered the Fire Release: Great Fireball Technique by the age 7. Even Takao was amazed at such a feat, according to him, Genin usually require much more experience and developed chakra to perform elemental techniques. She has also been shown combining her fire skills with weapons for techniques like Fire Release: Phoenix Sage Fire Technique. After learning that Ren can also manipulate fire, hoping to deter Ren from using Belial, her sensei Hayate taught her the Rasengan, made much more effective when in use with her fire manipulation to create her first jutsu: Fire Release: Flaming Rasengan. With this combination, Ren can punch through the strongest obstacles with relative ease, as well as severely damaging any opponent.
While she has a mastery of fire, she also has a great proficiency with the manipulation of the Wind Release. Almost equal in strength to her prowess of the element of fire, Ren has learned that the nature of the wind is her secondary element. Using it to increase her speed for even faster movement such as Wind Release: Light Step. Ren can can also use the wind release to "overwhelm" her opponents by blasting them away with jutsus like Wind Release: Gale Palm and Wind Release: Great Breakthrough. As well as using the wind in combination with fire to produce powerful jutsus like Fire Release: Running Fire.
Unlike Fire and Wind, the Lightning Release, is an affinity from her mother's side that she has only recently discovered. Ren discovered her ability to produce lightning when fighting Daisuke, Kagome, Kenji and Jirou. Her version of the lightning release is an enhance variation, thus explaining the whitish-blue color of her lightning instead of the normal whitish-yellow. Believing that this enhanced version was derived solely from her mother, Ren only wants Sora to teach her how to control and master it; but with her mother's disappearance, she refuses help from anyone willing to teach her.
From a young age, Ren has been able to easily learn various ninjutsu, scoring top marks in academy tests and being referred as a prodigy by several shinobi. She is a proficient strategist and during fights, she easily observes her opponents and accurately sees through their abilities while remaining calm. She then correctly chooses the most effective means and ninjutsu to counter them. Ren can deduce a technique's elemental property from the seals performed by its user.
- Main Article: Ren Kuroi's Jinchūriki Forms
As the jinchūriki of Belial Ren is gifted with an assortment of abilities. One of her prime abilities being the mainpulation of fire, lava, and an enhanced version of the Inferno Release. Other abilities include her augmentation of chakra which is due to Belial being sealed within her. A year after her promotion to chūnin however, Ren still had difficulties controlling Belial's chakra. Which in turn, resulted in Ren deciding to leave Konohagakure under the guidance of Ichirou Inuyama. Returning just in time for the Jonin Exams. Still the amount of chakra she possesses in total is abnormal when compared to that of other ninja.
Belial's chakra usually comes to Ren whenever she is faced with a life threatening situation. This is always because of the demon wolf's own will to live which means that it also has to save Ren's life for the time being. One of the most essential times that Ren ever accessed the chakra of the demon wolf was during a mission outside of Uzushiogakure. During the mission her team was ambushed by a pair of A-ranked missing-nin with the ability to kill them.
Ren was very agile: she had been shown to run up walls and do mid-air twirls. She dodged Kenji and Kagome's nature release attacks with little to no effort using high jumps. Her physical strength was also surprising as she could perform a planche, supporting her body in a horizontal position just by using her arms, with little effort. Ren makes up for her handicap with dexterity and agility to evade Kenji and Kagome. Ren had been shown to be an extremely cunning strategist. When she was a child, she demonstrated her military knowledge by successfully recounting The Third Shinobi World War in an old battle. She planned a trap for Ichirou Inuyama, which was only accidentally foiled by one of her subordinates.
She also displayed the ability to be so extremely capable of lying effectively that even the Hokage could not sense it regardless of how blatant the lie was, showing that Ren did not feel remorse for lying or many of her other actions. She also displayed an ability to realize whether someone was telling the truth or not, stating simply that she was a "people person".
Ren's intelligence made her very skillful in manipulating people. She had used this skill on many subjects, including her adoptive brother Jirou, Kenji, Kagome, Takao, and even Daisuke to an extent.
