Sanada Sarutobi (真田猿飛, Sarutobi Sanada), nicknamed Sanada the Brave (真田勇敢, Sanada Yūkan) by his friends, is a Genin-level Shinobi of Konohagakure's Sarutobi clan, and member of Team Star under the leadership of Shigeru Sarutobi where he partners Harumi Amaterasu and Kenji Nara. He is also the nephew of Shigeru and Shiori Sarutobi through his father.
Appearance[]
Sanada is a light-made up young man with dirty silver-colored hair he keeps tied in a ponytail at the back and swept back atop his head; save a single lock on his fringe, which hangs down between his violet eyes. Many remark that he is quite feminine in appearance. Kenji initially mistook him for a girl. Sanada is generally seen wearing a gray-colored poncho-like top over an all-black combat uniform with a wide brown belt which holds his various equipment. One of his more distinguishing traits are the purple triangular marks on his cheeks. He is also blind in his left eye, with his right being an implantation donated by his team-mate, Kenji.
Personality[]
Sanada, as his nickname suggests, is a brave young man who knows little of fear. He'd happily leap in the way of the fiercest assault just to protect others, and never balks from a challenge or tucks his tail and flees -- unless the mission demands it, of course. He is insightful and calculating but partial to loosing his temper and leaping before he looks or thinks. As such he has been called hotheaded and impulsive by his friends.

As a recent graduate of the ninja academy, Sanada has low-level skills all around the board. He is considered a Taijutsu specialist due to the fact he can perform both the swift release and velocity release kekkei genkai, which enable him to move at incredible speed, while also making most Taijutsu forms null and voided when used against him. He is skilled in the use of weapons and can increase their cutting range with the flying swallow technique.

Swift & Velocity Release[]
Swift Release is an advanced nature Kekkei Genkai that can be used to move at virtually instantaneous speed, granting Sanada an advantage over opponents with more strength than speed, such as users of Chakra Enhanced Strength. This nature therefore renders him invulnerable against most forms of Taijutsu. Shadowless Flight allows Sanada to move at very fast speeds, rapidly striking his opponents at various angles while avoiding any opposition. This technique is very effective against strength based close-combat Taijutsu users, and for making quick, pin-point close-range attacks. Projectiles thrown when this technique is used also carry greater momentum, thus aiding their lethality many times over, as well as making it easier for Sanada to sever limbs. Use of velocity release furthers this speed advantage, but at the cost of detrimental damage to his leg muscles, which could lead to disability if overused. As such Sanada relies more heavily on the standard swift release, and only uses velocity when the need arises.

Through a trap set by bandits on their fifth mission as a team, Sanada shielded both Kenji and Harumi from a trap he saw too late. The sphere-shaped casing exploded and showered Sanada's face with a poisonous gel that damaged his eyesight to the point he was essentially blind. Without the tools to repair the damage or even limit it, Kenji came to a desperate conclusion: he would give Sanada an eye. Kenji's sacrifice enabled Harumi to perform implantation surgery, thus saving Sanada's sight. A side-effect of this was that Sanada also gained access to the dōjutsu Kenji himself wields: the Zengoranme. With it Sanada can see chakra, track it mentally as though he had a "mental map" of the area, and gain an acute understanding of jutsu. It also enables him to perfectly see no matter how fast he moves using his swift release.
Taijutsu[]
Sanada is as close to a taijutsu specialist as one could expect from the academy. His speed and reflexes are unmatched within the current generation of Konoha's young shinobi, and his style incorporates that speed expertly. He employs fast-paced combo-attacks, pin-point jabs to the throat, eyes, and joints; can dodge and react to attacks with mere milliseconds of warning, and finally counter accordingly. Most of his assets he owes to the swift release he uses, but even without it Shigeru Sarutobi acknowledges his growing skill. Per the second story arc he also began using an unique gauntlet -- Soraotsume -- which allows him to momentarily phase in and out of physical realm, which makes harming him even more difficult. The gauntlet can also be used as a simple aid to his taijutsu skills.
Weapon Usage[]
From a young age Sanada proved to be skilled in the use of weaponry. Whether it was close-range weaponry such as swords or knives or long-range weaponry such as shuriken or senbon, Sanada's predisposed ability surpassed many his own age. Even amongst the Kenjutsu-focused Kazuki Clan few could match his skills. Though by no means where his abilities restricted to "normal" weaponry, as Sanada has demonstrated knowledge and ability in many types of foreign weaponry, and is a capable user of gauntlets. Coupled with his swift release he is fit to whiz around a battlefield and throw a number of projectiles with tremendous momentum, ultimately making his projectiles stronger and faster, and thus much harder to dodge; as well as use traditional bladed weapons. He is also fit -- through his implanted dōjutsu -- to guide the trajectory of thrown weapons via thread invisible to the naked eye. His main fighting style revolves around his kekkei genkai's speed and his amazing weapon skills.
Jōhyō[]
Sanada learned how to use a jōhyō during the time-skip between the first two story-arcs as a means of ranged attack (which his team-mates specialized in). Though he never imagined he would enjoy using it as much as he does. A jōhyō is comprised of five main parts: the dart, the rings, the rope, flags and feathers, and finally the handle. The dart is made of specially hardened steel shaped into a triangular prism with five rings attached. Through the fifth ring is the rope which Sanada regularly rubs down with powder to reduce its friction. The flags are attached to the dart as well to make it harder to see. Finally the handle is positioned at the base of the rope. With it Sanada becomes an utter terror for he can use his swift release to increase the weapons momentum during flight, quickly change direction and pull the rope taught around an enemy, and even "lash out" with the rope around his limbs to create a powerful hybrid-style of combat combining traditional taijutsu practices with skillful weapon usage.
